ASUS ZenBook 13S and ASUS ZenBook 14: record frames, minimal weight and quirky “notch” out in new ASUS laptops

In addition to a battery of products aimed at the most demanding users and gamers within the ROG family, the Taiwanese manufacturer has also updated its line of ZenBook laptops maintaining that light style with golden touches but with some novelty in the design. These are two new devices , the ASUS ZenBook S13 and ASUS ZenBook 14 , two devices with screens under 15 inches and highly compacted.

Although its name may lead to confusion, it is two computers with a screen of 14 inches (or almost) and FullHD resolution, the S13 being somewhat different for its aesthetics and its greater compaction. With different options of Intel processors of eighth generation and RAM, are two options for those who are looking for a lightweight laptop and escape to the largest diagonal sizes.

It was necessary to break some record with the laptops of this new batch and ASUS has looked for the one of the advantage of the frontal, arriving at a 97% of surface occupied by that panel FullHD of 13 inches . Do not breast in resolution in this case as we saw with the Acer Predator Triton 900 4K , but they boast that it is the laptop with the smallest frame of the moment.

A few frames of only 2.5 millimeters wide, for which they have had to make a curious concession. The camera leaves the structure leaving a kind of notch out , we will have to see if this solution is aesthetic and above all comfortable if it is closed when there is a protrusion as you think (and do not let see the official photos, it will be wait until we can stop by the stand).

This screen shows what eighth-generation Intel processors (i5 or i7) along with up to 16 GB of RAM can run, accompanied by graphics that can be moved by an NVIDIA GeForce MX150. The remaining space is occupied by SSD units and a 50-watt-hour battery that promises an autonomy of 15 hours .

The chassis is made of aluminum and in total measures 12.9 millimeters thick , without sacrificing a minimum resistance when complying with the MIL-STD 810G resistance certification. In this little space it gives so that there is a tray for microSD and a 3.5 mm dual audio jack, as well as the USB ports that we have indicated in the table.

They are 14 inches that according to ASUS are mounted on the chassis of what would be a laptop with 13-inch screen. In fact, what stands out of this laptop is that it does not reach even a kilo and a half with 1.45 kilograms of weight and that the frames are only 6.5 millimeters.

The screen is not full resolution, being conservative also in this team that stays in FullHD, although there are two options that also influence that final weight. If we choose the anti-glare screen the weight remains at 1.39 kilograms.

In this case there is no protrusion or notch that draws attention, but what we do see is that it maintains that ErgoLift hinge that we saw in the ASUS ZenBook Pro 14 last year. A design that according to the manufacturer improves the air flow in the lower part of the chassis and makes typing more comfortable.

It also inherits the NumberPad, an interactive touchpad that turns into virtual keypad in one touch, as we have also seen in the new ASUS StudioBook S . In the absence of testing, it seems that it is a “light” version of that first ScreenPad in ZenBook Pro presented in Computex and that only adds this numeric keypad function.

In its casings it integrates an eighth generation Intel processor, to choose between an i3, an i5 or an i7 , accompanied by up to 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage. As for graphics, the basic option pulls with the Intel UHD 620 card but there is option to choose a model also with the NVIDIA GeForce MX150, with a dedicated memory of 2 GB GDDR5.

For the sound, it has four speakers , on the sides of the keyboard and on the base (for the basses) taking advantage of the space created by the ErgoLift hinge. A system that has the Harmon Kardon certification accompanied by a 1.8 mm dual jack, and all the assortment of connections that we specified in the table.

Price and availability of the ASUS ZenBook S13 and ASUS ZenBook 14
We will have to wait to find out what these two new computers will cost because ASUS has not soldier clues about this data for these teams either. The ASUS ZenBook S13 (UX392) will be released in the coming months , but we do not know for sure the quarter and the markets.

For its part, the ASUS ZenBook 14 will be available in the first quarter of 2019 , but we also do not know the countries to which it will arrive or the starting price. So we will remain attentive and we will tell you as soon as we know all those details.
