LG K61, THE RIGHT CHOICE REVIEW

Written by

The new LG K61 completes the company’s medium-low range, with a decent price.

Sorry, for the title of the LG K61 review I ran away with English, but it is a very simple summary of my thoughts on a very nice device.

LG chose plastic (the engineers forgive me if I simplify) for the back cover, but the result is still more than pleasant and the quality of the device is in line with its price category.

However, the perception is positive, one does not have the impression of holding a “low cost” product, or perhaps better to say mid-range.

The only perplexity that I had “on paper” was related to the processor, because I don’t particularly like the Mediatek solutions, but all in all this aspect also does not disappoint.

Packaging and design

In the sales box of LG K61 there are the phone, as is normal, the charger and the connection / charging cable, but there are no earphones. On the other hand there is a transparent TPU cover, a material that adequately protects the smartphone, which in any case has the certification for military standards and resists drops from 1.2 meters.

But since I signed with blood the commitment not to mistreat smartphones, I leave you the pleasure of trying to launch it into the void.

LG has put only one speaker and has kept the headphone jack, which is now a rare commodity, while on the front of the aesthetic choices it has put the front hole for the selfie cam and lined up well 4 cameras on the back, with an aesthetic choice similar to that of V60.

The fingerprint sensor is in the classic position on the back which remains my favorite for practicality and immediacy.

I also really like the solution where you just touch the sensor to unlock the phone without going through the power button.

On the side there is a button dedicated to the Google assistant that can be called by voice or by pressing that button.

The SIM drawer supports two nano and one memory card at the same time , there is no need to choose between second SIM and memory expansion.

Display

With the price range of LG k61 you cannot expect to have a competition definition, but you cannot complain about the 6.53-inch IPS LCD with which it is equipped, with a screen-to-surface ratio of 82.5%, which suggests that the frames are not exaggerated but still clearly visible.

The ratio is 19.5: 9, slightly oblong, with a definition of 1080 x 2340 inches and a density of 394 pixels per inch.

Now that I have given you all these beautiful details, be honest: did you really want to know them? Because in principle I would tell you that the quality of the screen is good, but there are no HDR 10, wide color gamut and amenities that are usually reserved for products of higher quality and cost.

The front hole remains my favorite selfie camera solution, I couldn’t ask for anything better.

Readability under the sun is discreet, the brightness sensor is not very fast, but still behaves correctly, adapting the brightness to the ambient light.

Hardware and software

The software of this smartphone is in line with the LG tradition, so I would say complete, with a series of well-made “additional” applications, for example, I would like to point out the audio recorder or the menu for retouching photos.

However, it must be said that the software, even if complete, is not very fast and here the processor theme comes into play.

Mediatek is a forced choice to keep costs down, but the effects in everyday use are seen. Opening the camera or changing the side to use between the front and the back takes a little too long. On this there is little to do.

Mediatek, in any case, remains a fallback solution compared to Qualcomm, which in the mid-range has far superior performance.

The MT6765 Helio P35 processor has a maximum speed of 2.3 ghz, with eight cores available, but there is a significant difference compared to the performance of a Xiaomi or a Huawei product of the same price range.

To complete the hardware card there are 128 GB internal memory with 4 GB of RAM. The graphics card is instead PowerVR GE8320, I would like to know something about this GPU, but it is the first time that the test. It seems to me “normal”.

As anticipated, there is the fingerprint sensor on the back which is fairly fast.

The reception is more than good with 4G support, as well as the Wifi connection appears stable.

Hands-free audio has a very high volume but is completely bass-free, which is good for a telephone conversation, but not for listening to music.

The camera

LG K61 offers its users as many as 5 cameras, including four on the back and one on the front, in buchetto mode.

The rear ones are aligned horizontally, a choice that makes this smartphone more easily recognizable than the army of traffic lights that are in circulation.

The main sensor is 48 MPx, with F / 1.8 aperture, the 8 mpx wide angle with F / 2.2 aperture, there is a 2 mpx macro sensor with F / 2.4 and a 5 mpx depth sensor with F / 2.4

The front camera instead is 16 mpx; the videos (both on the front and on the back) are in fullHD format with 30 frames per second. On this front, LG offers lower performance than many Chinese competitors.

How are the photos? Fair, when there is good light, but when there is a condition of soft or low light, the result is less exciting.

I am attaching some examples to be able to make your appropriate assessments.

Battery

There are 4,000 mAh and if it is not enough for you to arrive in the evening, someone has to take care of you, there is something wrong and that needs to be solved. Joke, obviously, but not too much.

There are no amazing additions such as wireless charging, or super fast, but the capacity alone is a very interesting point in favor of LG K61.

LG K61 review, the conclusions

I conclude the LG K61 review with a mention also for K41s and K51s, which complete the 2020 proposal in the medium-low segment.

They are produced with a discreet quality / price ratio and a design that comes out a bit from the chorus in this period in which smartphones all look very much alike.

However, it must be said that the competition is very tough and it is not easy to find space in a segment that is teeming with smartphones made in China.
