One of the most beautiful phones on the market has been revised in the 5G key.

The hardest thing in preparing the Huawei Mate 20 X 5G review was to grab the phone because it’s really gigantic.

I had further confirmation of the really sensational size of the display for the reaction of my friends when they saw him leaning on the table during the recent holiday in Corsica.

I don’t know how many times the same scene was repeated: “Oh, did you bring the TV directly?!?” Because in fact a 7.2-inch display becomes really challenging, if not difficult to transport.

Huawei Mate 20X 5G is the adaptation of one of the most beautiful products on the market to next-generation networks, with a gigantic display that even has a 7.2-inch diagonal. Huawei explains that a screen of this size is necessary for the use of video, which is the basis of the fastest network.

  • Infinite battery
  • Very large display
  • Compatibility with 5G Stand Alone

  • Display too large

My synthesis on the Mate 20X 5G may seem to be in contrast, but in reality it is perfectly consistent because one of its strengths can also be its main weakness.

Design and packaging

  • 174.6 x 85.4 x 8.4 mm
  • Front and back in glass
  • Aluminum Frame
  • USB Type-C connector
  • Fingerprint sensor on the back
  • 233 grams
  • IP53 certification
  • Compatibility with optional stylus
  • NO 3.5 mm headphone connector

The box of the new Huawei Mate 20 X 5G should already give some clues about what’s waiting for you inside because it’s huge.

Inside there are super fast 40W charger, charging cable and earphones. As is often the case with Huawei’s prized products, there is also a transparent silicone cover, which is essential for a phone that is likely to fall often due to its generous size.

I struggle to understand why Huawei’s engineers chose to remove the 3.5 mm connector from such a large device, probably the 5G components required a lot of space.

The fingerprint sensor on the back is convenient, in the position that I continue to consider the most “natural” possible.

On the top of the phone there is also the infrared port to replace most of the remote controls in circulation.

Huawei Mate 20 X 5G is a device with dual sim hybrid. You can use two nano or one sim with the nano card, Huawei’s proprietary memory expansion.

  • 7.2 inch OLED display
  • FullHD + 1080 x 2240
  • Ratio: 18.7: 9
  • 130.7 cm2
  • Screen surface ratio: 87.6%
  • 346 ppi
  • HDR10
  • DCI-P3

The screen of this phone is necessarily the focus of the review of Huawei Mate 20 X 5G, also because it is the real distinctive element compared to the well-known and celebrated Huawei Mate 20 Pro.

There is no curved display, the definition is fullHD +, but readability in sunlight is still good.

Huawei has chosen the teardrop notch for the front camera, with a very small upper frame. The overall appearance is pleasant, even if a little anonymous.

The software offers the ambient display to receive notifications even when the screen is off.

Hardware, software and services

  • Kirin 980 processor
  • Octa core 2 × 2.6 ghz + 2 × 1.92 ghz x 4 × 1.8 ghz
  • Operating system 9
  • RAM 8 GB
  • Internal Memory 256 GB
  • EMUI 9.1
  • Modem Ballong 5000

I have no particular doubts about the operation of the new Huawei Mate 20 X 5G, although I have practically never been able to take advantage of the 5G network connectivity, because when I am at home I have no new generation signal and immediately after starting the test I left for Corsica.

Generally speaking, there are no new features in the use of Mate 20 X 5G, which is very similar to that of the P30 Pro and Mate 20 Pro, thanks to the Kirin 980 processor, the same as the previous models.

I don’t think I have to repeat my litany on the dystonia between the appearance of the phone and the user interface, because I believe that for readers of Mister gadgets it is a sufficiently well-known mantra.

Fast, powerful, responsive, always ready to respond to any solicitation. It warms up a little when the processor is under pressure.

  • Triple rear sensor 40 + 8 + 20 mpx
  • Main sensor 40 mpx F / 1.8 27 mm
  • Wide angle 20 mpx F / 2.2 16 mm
  • Zoom 8 mpx F / 2.4 80 mm
  • Selfie cam 24 mpx F / 2.0
  • 4k @ 30fps rear video
  • Front Video 1080p @ 30fps
  • LEICA optics

The photographic sector is the same as the Mate 30 Pro and the P30, but for some mysterious reason the rendering of the images is not the same.

Particularly when taking pictures in a very bright context, the sensor tends to burn the shot with an overexposure of the subjects.

It had never happened to me with Mate 20 Pro and with Huawei P30. For the rest, I confirm the evaluation made for the other top models. Photos more than good, videos that leave something to be desired.

I show you an iPhone shot in the same context, with the same external light. Look at water and sky to understand the difference.

The selfie cam is discreet, in line with the other top of the range on the market.

But on the Huawei Mate 20 X 5G camera there are no particular problems to report.

  • 5,000 mAh
  • Fast Charge 40W

I am sincere, on this detail I have to rely on what I read in the other reviews, because I have never had problems and found incredible autonomy, but I have practically never used the Mate with the 5G network, which certainly consumes more .

In 5G it heats up a lot and when it is used with super fast nets it reaches the evening by a hair, while when it is used in 4G it manages consumption at large.

Thanks to the super fast charge, in 30 minutes it reaches up to 70% of the charge.

Review Huawei Mate 20 X 5G: conclusions

A singular, niche phone, which has its peculiar element in the compatibility with 5G networks, whose diffusion is however reduced to a minimum.

The size of the display, which to some may be an asset to me, is a difficult obstacle to manage, too big for my habits. But for those who love watching videos or playing games it is a pleasure for the eyes.

The price is high , but in line with the other products compatible with 5G. Curiously, it is compatible with an S Pen type nib, of which I had never heard of and which I have never seen in stores. Unfortunately, however, the M Pen does not hide in the phone.
